DISCUSSION

DR A. C. BISHOP asked whether any of the sills show the effects of differentiation in situ and if so whether such differentiation is similar to that described for the suite as a whole.

The AUTHOR replied that in situ differentiation is recorded in thick gabbroic sills of the Crinan area, and involves crystal fractionation of ilmenite and ferro-magnesian phases. This late-stage, high-level differentiation, perhaps only of local importance, is represented by the strong cross-trends in TiO2 , versus Zr or Y diagrams. Differentiation within the suite as a whole is represented by a strong iron- enrichment trend, by rapid depletion in Ni and Cr, and in TiO2, versus Zr or Y diagrams by the portion showing increase of TiO2 with Zr or Y. This overall differentiation occurred at depth below the Southwest Highlands, prior to intrusion as sills or subsequent extrusion.
