This paper reviews the scattered literature on Quaternary arid-type alluvial fan soil sequences, and presents a series of model stratigraphies. These are primarily influenced by the degree of entrenchment and by climatic controls. These models are used to interpret well exposed Miocene fan deposits from the Madrid Basin, central Spain.
