A ‘hot’ new shale facies from the Upper Carboniferous of Northern England

A new radioactive shale lithology from the Upper Carboniferous of the Pennine Basin of northern England is described. It shows geochemical and lithological characteristics similar to the well studied Marine Bands, hut only contains an impoverished marine nektonic fauna. Thus shales of the new lithology have considerable potential for miscorrelation with the Marine Bands in wirelie logs. The presence of such shales in the basin increases its source rock potential. These shales occur as part of a transgressive systems tract.
