Bedload-transported pedogenic mud aggregates in the Lower Old Red Sandstone in southwest Wales

Siltstones which exhibit large scale cross stratification and three dimensional bedforms in the Ridgeway Conglomerate Formation are interpreted as partly representing bedload transported pedogenic mud aggregates. The siltstones contain mixed-layer swelling clays, abundant desiccation cracks, calcrete nodules and pseudoanticlinal slip planes which suggest the presence of vertic palaeosols and a hot, seasonal climate. Compaction obliterated much of the original mud aggregate texture which is retained only where quartz grains surround individual aggregates.
