Celebration and consideration of citations

The recent editorial policies of the Journal of the Geological Society are described in relation to an 18 year record of its citation statistics. Differences in citation patterns between types of papers are analysed and the use of the impact factor discussed. The Journal has now reached a long-term high in its impact factor.
